The Sea

The scrounging sea
besieges jetties,
reaches for the lighthouse:
pearly pepper pot
set out for lunch.

Its appetite aroused,
it swallows headlands whole,
redraws the memories
of fisherfolk,
coordinates of gulls.

Where are they now,
those gentle waves,
obsequious on golden sands,
each proffering
a frilly serviette?
