Letter From Lord Balfour
I must say, the job has been well done.
In the annals of empire, it can now be recorded,
Without fear of quibble or contradiction,
That the Arab has been adequately rewarded.
Let the members of the Carlton Club take note
Of this salutary victory for common sense:
That every man, woman, child and scabrous goat
Has now been placed within our providence.
Of course, the Mufti and his mob in petticoats
May find it all a bit hard to swallow.
Reactionaries do tend to go for the throats
Of those who underwrite the world of tomorrow.
Last night we heard Belshazzar in Hebrew —
That's real culture, I'm sure you'll agree.
No reasonable Arab or Kaffir could misconstrue
This first instalment of our generosity.
Jerusalem, 1925
