The Story of Adam
An epitaph for humanity
He took a bite
And got a fright.
Forgot it all
In sex that night.
A new day dawned,
A race was spawned.
It multiplied,
But heaven mourned.
The flags unfurled.
The battle swirled,
And fitfully
Destroyed the world.
Our way we wend
Till paths contend.
In that first slip
Was writ our end.

COMMENTS ON UNLIKE OTHER BOYS ~
It's a really big book, Alan, in every sense of "big" — and I congratulate you on it ... I can feel you living and hear you speaking in every poem — that incomparable eye for an image, and tone of voice for a very special personal music. But mere words cannot express admiration enough. I just read and read, happy to hear your very own voice, grown a good deal more confident with the years... — James Kirkup
